Format
Dietary supplements are frequently used by cancer patients seeking alternative therapies for relief of side effects associated with chemotherapy and conditions that accompany cancer (e.g. insomnia, anxiety), as well as for treatment of cancer itself. Surveys have shown that the prevalence of dietary supplement use in cancer patients receiving conventional therapy ranges from 54 to 77%. The potential for drug-supplement interactions is particularly high in cancer patients, given how most chemotherapy drugs work and cause toxic effects. The evaluation of potential interactions is complicated since there is no uniformity among supplement products and supplement interaction studies in cancer patients, or even healthy volunteers, is scarce. Despite the lack of information, an awareness of the potential important interactions between chemotherapy agents and dietary supplements is crucial to prevent unexpected toxicity or suboptimal cancer therapy. This issue helps define several clinically relevant interactions between chemotherapy agents and dietary supplements.
