As we learn more about the complex nature of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), there is a parallel effort to develop new treatments, more convenient routes of administration, and to improve treatment goals. It is in the best interest of all healthcare personnel to stay abreast of the latest developments in the management of T2DM. This article updates the participant on 7 developments in the treatment of T2DM: 1) saxagliptin (OnglyzaTM), the new dipeptidyl-peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, 2) An update on research evaluating “tight” glucose control in patients with T2DM, 3) An update on cardiovascular risk with rosiglitazone (Avandia®) and pioglitazone (Actos®), 4) Safety warnings for insulin secretagogues (i.e., sulfonylureas, meglitinides), 5) The potential link between insulin glargine (Lantus®) and cancer, 6) Promising new insulin formulations; inhaled and buccal insulin products, and 7) Liraglutide, a once-daily glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analog similar to exenatide (Byetta®).
