Migraine is a condition that often involves moderate to severe headache pain accompanied by symptoms such as nausea and light/sound sensitivity. Over 30 million Americans between the ages of 12 and 80 have migraines. Over half of migraine sufferers report severe disability or the need for bed rest during attacks. Migraineurs have higher medical costs than non-migraineurs, and an estimated $13-17 billion is lost annually due to decreased work productivity. Despite considerable advances in migraine management, 50% of cases remain undiagnosed or under-treated. Some patients believe that their migraines are just “bad headaches,” causing a delay in appropriate diagnosis and treatment. Community healthcare providers can play a significant role in migraine care by identifying headache sufferers who need further evaluation, helping migraine patients weigh the treatment options, and educating patients about migraine triggers and medication overuse. This issue briefly reviews the possible causes, symptoms, and diagnosis of migraine, and discusses both prevention and treatment. A discussion of menstrual-related migraine and its treatment is included. The migraine management options addressed include both prescription and over-the-counter medications.
