Approximately 19 million sexually transmitted infections (STIs) occur in the U.S. every year. Adolescents and young adults 15 to 24 years of age account for almost half of these infections. Timely diagnosis and treatment of STIs is critical to relieve symptoms and reduce or avoid long-term complications. This issue will present an overview of common STIs including chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, syphilis, genital herpes, and human papilloma virus (HPV) infection. The symptoms that differentiate STIs are highlighted and effective prevention strategies, including screening and the treatment of sexual partners, are discussed. The drug(s) of choice, alternatives, and specific treatment regimens for each STI are discussed. Side effects, drug interactions, precautions, and contraindications for the recommended medications are summarized in a practical table. The two HPV vaccines that help prevent HPV-related genital warts and cancers are also reviewed.
