The number of international travelers increased by 40% over the last decade. The fastest growing travel destinations between now and 2020 are forecast to be East Asia and the Pacific, South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Many travelers make their plans without ever considering the health risks posed by their destinations. The need for travel medicine services has increased along with travel to developing regions, where preventable diseases rarely acquired in the U.S. are more common. Travel medicine has emerged as a specialty in a variety of settings, including multidisciplinary clinics in HMOs and university medical centers. Pharmacists, as accessible community healthcare providers with an established role in vaccine administration, are moving into this specialty. This issue focuses on the prevention of travel-related infectious diseases, and the pharmacist’s role in providing travel medicine services. An overview of 9 travel-related, vaccine-preventable diseases is included, along with a table listing practical facts for each vaccine. The prevention of 2 travel-related illnesses, traveler’s diarrhea and malaria, are discussed in more detail.
