Over the last decade, interest in Vitamin D has exploded. In addition to its role in calcium homeostasis and bone health, vitamin D is increasingly being recognized for its effects on other systems of the body including the immune system, the pancreas, the brain, and the cardiovascular system. Vitamin D has also been recognized as potentially playing a role in fall prevention and the prevention of some cancers. The recommended minimum level of 25(OH)D, the major form of vitamin D circulating in the body, is under debate; experts have proposed that levels of 30 ng/mL (75 nmol/L) or higher may be optimal. In the U.S., about 36% of healthy young adults have vitamin D levels that are less than sufficient. Deficiency appears to affect all age and demographic groups. Few foods contain substantial amounts of vitamin D and most people require supplementation to achieve adequate levels. This issue summarizes the evidence to date that supports or refutes vitamin D’s potential health benefits in a variety of diseases and conditions. Current views regarding vitamin D requirements, recommended serum levels, adequate intakes and supplementation are also reviewed.
